The Churches of Serifos

Life is gradually turning into a temporary new normal, everything doesn’t seem to be a struggle anymore and I am just getting on with things. Annoyingly I had typed in this piece of the post in yesterday, I know what I did wrong and I am just going to have to try and remember what was typed there. I have had a few more Wordle seed tips, and it appears one of my Sifnos friends is getting hooked also, the one without the fluffy tail. I am amazed at how quickly the day goes, one minute I am in the shower, next minute I am in bed. To calm the nerves of my carers, I let them know when I am up in the morning and am in bed in the evening, with the promise that I keep my phone in my pocket when I am on the move. I am definitely becoming a bit of a Miss Marple nosy Parker, sitting out on the balcony as I do. Yesterday, the ex landlord of my Sifnos friends was walking back to his house with a hat on. The strong wing blew it off his head and he went back to fetch it. He then met a friend and said something in Greek. I did not catch the whole sentence but I heard the word for hat, I thought it would be a useless word that  Duolingo taught me, but maybe not so. Giraffe definitely is. 


We had a bit of a ferry logjam yesterday. I saw the SuperJet was coming in, and I spotted the Solomos coming too, but it held station away from the harbour. I then saw the Artemis hoping to enter too, it also stayed put. Odd as I know they can berth two ferries at the same time here. The mystery was solved as a little while later the new ferry on the block, the Prevalis could be seen steaming away from harbour. Eventually the Artemis could come in, it’s probably first come first serve and the Superjet is gong to win that every time.

My friend from Serifos came by, a brief but a very welcome visit. They produce the Serifos map which I think is great, and the 2023 map is from the printers and they had a copy for me. See above. They also had a book about the churches of Serifos, which is fantastic as I have visited a lot of them. I will enjoy reading that, maybe a church a day, there are well over a hundred of them. There is a map in the back, so I can mark the ones I have seen.

In the evening our friend from Sifnos, came with someone they know and their dog “the Cookie” ( I know why they say that) who we met when I was with Ronnie. We had pizza and salad, and my first alcoholic drink for over two weeks. They also brought in some ice cream filled rolls which I had for breakfast with some leftover pizza. Ronnie was looking through the railings and I saw he had spotted a hedgehog in my friends ex landlords house. I know they put dry cat food out, I wonder if the. Hedgehog was going to eat that? I have found an interesting was to eat pizza, especially if you are on the hoof and don’t want bits dropping off your slice. You roll it up, starting with the edge, rolling towards the middle. It works quite well and make the doughy end bit taste a bit more appetising!

Monday 20st - Tuesday 21st,  Hora Serifos So while cooking my first meal in the house, the estate agent called again and asked if I could meet the owner of the property at seven thirty. Surely so I said. I was cooking kedgeree, two eggs were hard boiled, half an onion fried. I had a tin of tuna and what I thought was rice. With no scales it was a bit of an estimation job on how much to cook. I had  also bought this small jar of what was called  curry sauce to add a bit of a kick to the meal. So while checking the rice, it did not have the right texture I thought. I then realised it was a type of pasta! Anyhow I mixed it all up, added a dollop of the curry sauce, it was different, but it was quite edible! Moral of the story, find the Greek words for things you want to buy to make sure you get the groceries you want! A day to remember…

So my last full day on Paros and I took the car out again. This time to a village I had driven past, but needed to  explore properly. So I had a wander around the old part of Lefkes, I would have cheerfully bought a coffee or a candle in the church but everything was closed up. I did see an old lady wandering the streets, but no one else really. It’s gone cold again, that strong wind is back. Temperature single digits. I did hear the church  bells, that was largely the only sound coming out of the village. Here as elsewhere Montbretia is flowering, I think in the UK June would be when it flowers. I have no idea what the pretty yellow building is or was… My  next village was Marpissa, this was a village of windmills, except only one was intact, the others derelict. Like Lefkes everything was shut up, but I think I did see a couple of people to say hello to. So my early morning duties

  So my early morning duties are to turn the heating on which ignites an oil boiler outside the apartment. Turning on the hot water is my second job, in the winter you can’t rely on the sun to heat your morning shower. The boiler is quite an antiquated beast and reminds me of boilers in houses when I was a child. The fact this place has central heating is quite unusual on the island.     On the way to getting the car I pop into the bakery and buy myself a spanakopita a sort of pasty with cheese and spinach in it for lunch. My Greek is rubbish but I manage to buy one and pass on a few Kalamera to people I bump into along my way, including the local shop. I have a flask full of coffee as there are not likely to be any places open for drinks on the way. My first port of call in the car is Vathi, I have the roads to myself, I have driven on the right side of roads before so it’s ok for me.
