Back on Sifnos

I have not posted on this blog even though I have returned to both Sifnos and Serifos after my leg healed. But this time, the two year anniversary had me travel to Sifnos, and although the first two weeks did not go as planned, I think I more than made up for it on the third week. Here is a photo I took while having a coffee in Apollonia with my friends, when I was able to get out and about again.

As walking is good for physical and mental health, I often go with my friends to the next town Apollonia and walk back. It’s easier than walking back from than to, as the road slowly goes uphill on the outward leg. But even sixty five year old legs soon get accustomed to the hills over here. The road is not so busy and you see so much more than when you are in a car. Nature is marching on after the heat of summer, and careful eyes can spot  it coming into bloom again. The main flowering season is in the Spring when the islands are covered in flowers, before they go to seed and summer sets in.

One of the joys about returning here is I am known, so when I pass shops and restaurants I can say hello and get a friendly response. It’s been a while since I was here, I think last Xmas. The place is still busy, the tourist season is expanding at both ends of the calendar. But it’s cooler, low twenties which is perfect for walking about. I stayed at two places, I had to change as the first was closing for the season. It’s right by the beach so you can hear the waves kissing the sand while lying in bed. It’s very relaxing. One of the restaurants I love going to is my friends favourite known as Cameron. This beautiful cat was sitting on a vacant table when we ate.

My friends have a log burner, which they buy logs for. But for kindling they go to the local tip where there are lots of pallets that can be cut up with my friends mini chainsaw and put in his vehicle. The tip is near St Simeon a church that overlooks Kamares and on a good day, it’s a spectacular view.

A final photo for this post. The local potter in Kamares has an interesting collection of cars. An old Rolls Royce, a Jeep, this vehicle ( below ) and a yellow old design Beetle with Taxi markings. Years ago, when I used to take the rough footpath with my friends dog to Apollonia when we were both younger, we stopped at a church on route. As we sat there contemplating the view, the potter arrived, let himself into the church and we heard singing. After a while it stopped and he left.
