Swimming lesson

Last night Ronnie was happy to come along and have a meal in the town. It was still hot, we went to a restaurant which is on the second floor of a building overlooking the port and beach. The place was really friendly towards him and gave him his own little water bowl, a silver salver, made out of tin foil. As usual he stole the hearts of many people in the place, a couple that he seemed very keen on, I realised later they had two dogs he wanted to say hello too under their table. Anyway we had a little free starter, with bread and I order the lemon chicken with potatoes. I ordered my beer in Greek, she said it was ok, but the words for “a beer please” would do, instead of my convoluted “can I have a beer please”. The meal  was very good, when the Superjet appeared, Ronnie decided to look through the railing to see if his owners had  appeared on it.

In the morning, he got up quite early and was goofing around, which is a good sign, except five thirty in the morning is just a little early to be making a racket. Good job he wasn’t messing with his noisy snake. I gave up and listened to the second part of the Rest is Politics Leading series, with John Major, which was very good. I had a looked at the map last night and decided we could go back to Faros but go the other side of it first where there is Fassolou beach to explore it before it gets too hot.

After we parked and walked to the beach, I remember the first time I came here, on my first trip to the island.. it was chucking it down. I could not see much, and did not get out but drove off. But it was lovely today, there was only one couple there, but they soon drove off. We went up to see the funnily named Timios Stavros church. Looking back to the beach, we could see more evidence of the silver mining undertaken years ago.

It wasn’t such an interesting church, but a look over the headland did reveal a nice coastal scene. We then walked back to the beach, and Ronnie had a swim. I went in quite deep, but I decided just to follow him on foot and watch him. His legs are mesmerising to look at, and he gets his breathing and everything coordinated wonderfully. His long tail appears to act like a rudder. He did a three point turn in the water with ease.

After the swim, we went back to Faros, dried off and had a coffee.

Tomorrow is our last full day together, on Wednesday one of his owners come back. Tomorrow will be my last post, before I return to Serifos in September.
