Our friend is back home

Tuesday night another Sifnos friend came back on the ferry, and we all convened at the house I am in. I had lots of presents, a fruit cake, chocolates, a book from two friends who live in Twyford, more shorts to replace the ones with the thigh high slit in, once I can wear them, chocolates and more. We had a meal from Cameron, which was superb. The book is a sort of funny book based on the Midsomer Murders TV series.

In the morning, I decided to sample the cake, unfortunately it was so nice, I ate it all in one sitting, one of Sifnos friends loves fruit cakes, so sorry about that!  In the morning we went to the Medical Centre, we were waiting to be seen and then the junior doctor from Serifos who I know  turned up. She is working on Sifnos for a week, and had not heard about my injury. I imagine everyone knows in the Serifos centre now! I had three people working on my leg, my foot is a bit swollen, they said keep the leg elevated. Of course we forgot the bandages we bought the other day, we will take them Friday. My friend bought some Danish pastries for us all and we all met at my house for elevenses.

Todays church, I know, it’s near the industrial area. It’s called Agia Aekaterini. It does look like the church in Panagia. It celebrates its name day in 25th November which should be good for me. The celebrations go into the night and the next day, with a cod stew and loukoumathes ( Greek honey puffs) which are given to pilgrims. A canon is also likely to be heard. I have put all the Panigyri dates in my calendar. Looking at the churches where there are more than one on the island with the same name, alternative dates are are sometimes scheduled. As I have looked through the book now as I added the dates, there are lots of very interesting churches, their history and likely celebrations. I thought most were in the summer, quite a lot are, but plenty left in the off season, which is good.

It’s been a bit of a quiet day, I have done my usual selection of things, also have heard from another friend on Serifos who may drop over, meet their friend who lives here and then they will both come by. It’s  been hot here, but not as bad as the reported temperatures in Italy, but maybe parts of the Greek mainland will reach those temperatures soon. I have moved the indoor fan onto the table outside blowing air over me. I am not showing off or anything but the title of this entry, I converted it in my head, and Google translate only had one word that I missed out on. The Greeks will often say things like “the house ours” and of course we just say “our house” and don’t bother with the “the”, so very often I forget to say it.
