Back to Sifnos

It’s not been quite so plain sailing on this trip to Syros. There has been a lot of administrative effort into organising the trip but hopefully next time it will be a bit smoother. In the morning I was woken just before six, so I could get dressed to be taken to the port. The guys on the Artemis welcomed me on board, and I was put in my usual place. We left on time and I found an inner peace on the ferry as it gently chugged along, rolling gently in the slight swell of the sea. Luckily there was no signs of sea sickness !

From the church book, there are two churches of the name Agia Varvara. ( Barbara ). The first is in the Kastro or castle area of Chora. It offers magnificent views of Livadi, Sifnos, and other islands. Because of its height and the granite it sits on, it attracts lightening. Years ago, a churches icon was put in a nearby house, where it was placed in the best room, with a candle lit by it. The second church is in Panagia, it’s very small and in 1960 the earth roof was replaced and a bell tower built. Below a view of Serifos on the way back.

I would have loved to have been on deck looking at the view. I imagine a lot of people look at my leg and think, oh motorbike accident. when people ask, which they do, they are shocked, it was just by walking about. I look at envy at people on two legs, I really do, it reminds me when I could not, during my early teenage years, I know I will get better but I do appreciate doing something that some people are not able to do, say after a life changing incident. Back at the house, I had lunch with my friends, then they helped me unpack and I had a nap. Afterwards I sat outside on the balcony,   I could hear people on the beach and in the sea, there were white horses as it rolled onto the beach. It’s also very windy here, strong gusts of wind blowing anybody’s little washing line frames that they use here, instead of a proper line. I am off to the Medical Centre Wednesday for a dressing change and a chat with the doctor, and on Thursday the Dog Palace owner is hoping to visit. With the wind, it’s ripping off the Bougainville flowers and sending them into the air like little kites. When it drops suddenly they come crashing to the ground, where they wait to be lifted up into the sky again.
