My Titanic moment, on the Dionisios Solomos

Tuesday 5th July night - Hora, Wednesday 6th  July - Hora, Livadi

So I went to the Taverna next to the New House last night, as I had eaten a proper lunch I ordered the Fennel balls and the Chick pea stew, the latter is a speciality on Sifnos. I washed it all down with two bottles of beer. I had paid up and was about to leave and the Swedish group appeared that I mentioned here. They asked me to join them even though I had finished. I ended up chatting to them for two hours and got to them all really well. I thought the son Hugo was really mature for his age (17), his godmother Sara and Hugo’s mother lovely too. Unfortunately I cannot remember his mothers name, sorry. I apologise because they wanted to look at this blog! I walked home very happy, to have had a very special fun evening.

The following day, I cleared the house and walked up to  Upper Hora, I had some goodbyes to say. First I popped into the bakers for a Praspitta pie for myself and Ronnie, I told Manolis I hoped to see him in September. I then went next door and saw Markka ( should have checked her name ), her husband was there and I could see he had a utility bill. So we had a chat about electric bills, petrol prices and so on. It’s a nightmare in Greece as it is in the UK. I said goodbye and told them,  I hope to be back soon. Finally it was time to have a Freddo Cappuccino at my favourite coffee place. Marinos for reasons that I did not understand was wearing a mask, although it did not cover his nose. Maybe he was expecting to be inspected by some authority? The guy with the grey cloak came in and I asked him if he spoke English. As it turned out his English was the best in Hora. He was a priest,  his name is Father Panagiatis and his church is the one with the big blue dome in the Town Hall Square. He has two two grown up children in Athens. I used google translate to tell Marinos I would be back in September, he had remembered I was going to Sifnos. Where? Kamares, Apollonia…. Kamares. So after this, it was time to catch the bus to Livadi. At the harbour there was a bit of confusion as there were two ferries coming in close to each other. The first was a Sea Jet.

Not long afterwards  my Zante Ferry turned up and we all piled on. What I had not realised before was you can go out on the open deck on the bow of that ferry. That’s where I headed. As we left Serifos, we went past the sunburn beach and had views of its stunning coastline, that you can’t see when on its land mass.

Soon we were heading into Sifnos harbour, I had to take this picture before the captain ( or who was steering the ship ) executed the usual flawless three point turn, so the stern meets up with the concrete harbour of Sifnos.

Once I got off I met Hazel, Mike and Ronnie who all gave me a lovely welcome. It was time to walk to the place where we normally have my first lunch on the island where they do meat on sticks and wraps with slices of meat with chips in. I got out Ronnie’s Praspitta pie out which he enjoyed, he looked really well. He also had a bit of lunch from us as well. Mike went back to work and the three of us all walked to the Tiny house, where I unpacked the other goodies for them all. Ronnie has a  new toy snake, for when his old one expires, but later on he made it clear he only wanted to play with the new one! I left them after a while, unpacked in their old apartment, had a nap then went shopping. It was nice to see some faces who recognise me, at the Supermarket, the bakers Maria, and Cameron where I was to book us in for a meal tonight. Sadly their dog has recently died, so I had a chat about that, very sad. So Sifnos is home from home, the wind has calmed, and it’s getting busy.
