Wanderings and a big surprise
Sunday afternoon and evening 19th June - Hora, Serifos
So I decided to take a wander in the afternoon, get my bearings. I expected to see things I missed last time, but I was in for a big surprise! Luckily there is a big modern church near where I am staying, which is highly visible, so I imagined correctly, I could head for it from above and find the house on my way back. So I headed up past it. The Hora’s are a labyrinth of paths, there are multitude of ways you can get around, so it’s easy to miss things until you have been here for a while. The first very interesting building was this one, which seems to have been involved in a local film festival.
I then left it and went down to where the baker, cafe and windmills are that I saw last time, where I met the guy with a donkey. I bought myself an ice cream and used “Adio” after checking my pronunciation. We went back to English for a weather report. I saw a sign for a 2.2km to a village called Kallitsoss. I don’t remember going to it, I am going to have to see how the weather pans out, but it could be somewhere to go. The walk said it started at the windmills, but by them I could not see a clear sign that the walk there commenced at that point. Meanwhile in the place I am staying in, there is a leaflet with a walk around the Hora’s but it’s in Greek which is a pity, I could follow it, but I would miss out on the interesting narration.
In the evening, I tried to use google maps to get me back to my newly found square but found it very hard to use as the paths round here are not straight and heading in the direction you want to go is very difficult. I knew I was close and ended up asking someone, turned out, I was yards away. This showed up the flaw in my approach, the Town Hall that I thought was one, isn’t on the square at all it’s nowhere close! I found somewhere to eat and saw that the square was not busy, everyone is in Livadi perhaps. There are a couple of places that were closed, maybe because of it being a Sunday. On the way back I found a few more photo opportunities..
The church is almost certainly a sailors church. Locked of course. Final shot is actually of Sifnos in the distance, the nice sunset is probably caused by air pollution, but short of swimming to these islands, I can’t help that sadly. I am hoping to get a nice sunrise one morning.
