Grounded

Wednesday 22nd evening - Thursday 23rd Hora

So while cooking the pasta for my meal last night I solved a question I have had for ages about my little mini cooker. It has two large cooking plates which you turn on with dials and you also have a mini one, that I think you can use to boil water. But there is no dial for the little plate. Problem solved, when you turn on one of the big plates, the little one comes on! I think this is a nasty safety situation, especially if you have never come across one of these cookers before. The good news is I successfully washed a load of t shirts and ‘smalls” and my big apartment towel after plumbing the washing machine into the toilet. It’s got really windy again and everything has dried in no time. My own tumble dryer with no co2 emissions!

One one occasion when I woke up in the middle of the night on the sofa bed, I had a sneak peek outside. It was amazing. The stars are so bright and clear. There is hardly any light pollution here. I can imagine  clear skies and lack of light pollution are good news for astronomers, another idea for the future perhaps. The Hora map that I have been looking at, is produced by Serifos Friends I have contacted them using their form, indicating I would be interested in helping, they do volunteer work, hopefully in cool weather. As an English speaker I might be useful to them. One of my friends has suggested I look at Google Translate to help me learn Greek, the app is installed…

So last night when I got back home, I realised I had overdone the sun worshiping while flopping about in the sea, of course just because you are in the sea and cool, those sun rays are still zapping you. I did not sleep well because I could not get comfortable. I don’t have sunstroke, I am not shivering,  but I need to keep out of the sun for at least today. During the night there was this odd rustling sound. I turned on the light and this huge grasshopper was stumbling around. I caught him with a cup and a piece of paper and let him out. One thing I have discovered is neither of the shops here sells paracetamol or anything similar. I have some left, but I might go to Livadi tomorrow and hide from the sun and get more.

I bought a few more supplies for breakfast and the after sun stuff. That lot came to quite a lot of money, I like eating two bits of fruit a day, I am sure they are cheaper in Livadi and even cheaper in the UK. So I am going to have to think about my shopping, do I go down to Livadi or support the local shops? The problem here is unlike the UK is that there are no prices on the fruit, I know on Sifnos in the big supermarket the prices are shown.

On the way up I met the guy with the horse. He was depositing some stuff from a house, there was a toilet and there were two old white goods machines, He has dumped this stuff by the rubbish bins and I assume he is thinking they will be carted away, when the bins are emptied.

Later on my way,  I met a very old lady, I gave here a Kalamera, she clearly decided I was Italian and replied with a Bongiorno!

Back at the house, I applied the aftersun and am keeping out of the sun!
