Thursday
So today I have been around the right hand blob of Milos, imagine the island if you can, as two blobs joined together with a narrow piece of land, or better still have a look at Google maps! I had an idea what I was going to see, and I thoroughly enjoyed the day. I took lots of photos, I can’t put them all on the blog, but if you have time have a look at the link to Google Photos.
The first beach is not really a beach at all! Its called Sarakiniko. It’s a strange white moonscape with a mostly hard surface which is in some very unusual shapes, it’s very odd indeed. Unlike other beaches I have seen, there were other people about, I imagine in the summer, it gets very busy. I would not want to lay on this surface, it must be very hard! But there was a little area with sand.
Amazingly there were plants growing in these rocks. Not many as you can see, but there were some. It must be a very hostile environment to say the least. When I got back to my car, there were several white cars in the car park, so you have to be careful, my car did not have remote locking, which would have helped identify it. White coloured cars are popular in a sunny climate for obvious reasons!
The next beach was a beach, called Alogonmandra, but there was a rocky element to it as well. On this beach I was alone. On the approach road, I saw three donkeys in a small field. Sadly this beach had a lot of litter, maybe brought in from the sea. On the rocky areas, there were these footprints, that looked like a dinosaur had wandered over the molten rock, not really of course!
Next I visited Papafragas caves. I think you might get a better view by boat, but the views were quite amazing. Certainly here there was a profusion of a beautiful purple flower I had not seen before, over in the UK, we would probably pull it up as a weed!
I suffer a bit from vertigo, but there were some people taking some rather silly risks to get a photo of themselves on these rocks. We have seen sadly, how some of these people have met a tragic end. On the first photo above there was a minute beach. Somehow, I don’t know how, but two ladies were sitting on a towel on the beach.
I then drove to what I hoped would be a nice village called Pollonia. It has a nice beach area, but all the buildings were rooms, hotels and tavernas. It was of course quite quiet, as there are not many people here yet. It was completely soulless. I know we are all guilty of how these places have been developed but this was probably a nice little community, but isn’t any more. So sad.
Further round the coast there was a huge mining operation going on. There were lorries thundering along the roads, which were only wide enough for them. The roads could easily have been widened, the mining company could have used some of their profits to do this. Large areas around here had been impacted by the mining, it will be interesting to see how well they put the landscape back. I saw one last beach, which had lovely coloured water by it, before I headed back to my room.
So tomorrow I will visit the western blob of the island, it looks like it has several interesting things to look on the coast, that will give me Saturday to have a free and easy day!
