Serifos first thoughts

 Saturday night and Sunday

So last night I walked into town having read up on good places to eat. I underestimated how far my first of two possible choices were, but the walk was worth it.  I was basically eating at a place called Lydia’s and Lydia was there in person. I was the only customer, she is by the beach, probably a kilometre out of town. I had some wine, a Greek salad and Souvlaki. It was very good. I walked back into town, I was going to have some more wine, but I really did not fancy any of those places. So I just walked home. I did catch a few decent photos along the beach.

I also saw this very strange plant growing on someone’s pergola, it reminded me of the plants you might find in South Africa.

So after handing the car back and having lunch at the harbour, the ferry arrived and I got on. It was a lovely day to sit outside and watch the Mediterranean go by. I had forgotten, but as we were in the way to Piraeus, that we would be stopping at Sifnos, odd we did that, it seemed a bit surreal, but I will get there in a couple of days time. As we left Sifnos behind, a SeaJet headed in which made for a nice view.

As we neared Serifos, I could make out the harbour and the Hora, the capital which is up on a mountainside, and in two sections. As I got off I met the chef at Cameron on Sifnos, he was going to  Piraeus for a couple of days, I said I would see him soon! It’s a small world on a Greek ferry ! I will need to decide wether I am going to walk up to Hora, hire a car or get a bus. I will check how far it is, it looks pretty steep.

I soon found my rooms, I am looking over the harbour. The owner dog Mike, was very friendly, as with a lot of Greek dogs, he is a bit overweight, no dog walkers here! I then decided to have a wander around. I walked in both directions, it’s not very big, some of the places were not open yet.

Being Sunday a lot of the tavernas were busy with locals, they are the ones to go for maybe! My sink in the room, is a little odd, it is a sink, but no tap! There is a little oven cooker device, a fridge and so on. But it’s really just a room, you could not really cook here, except warm some baked beans up, but there is a kettle. I know Hazel and Mike have filters on their tap water on Sifnos, the Greeks, don’t drink their tap water, I don’t know what’s supposed to be wrong with it! I drink bottle water to take tablets, but boil water for tea and coffee. I have bought my breakfast for the next few days. Here is the small church by the harbour.

More tomorrow!
