Checking on a Sifnos water treatment facility.
Friday
So I had another lovely meal with Hazel, Mike and Ronnie, last night with their friend Yan. Today it’s still windy here. I took Ronnie on a shorter walk, we went along towards Apollonia, but we turned around when we got to the big concrete dam. On our return leg, we came across an English couple walking all the way, so I gave them a couple of tips about the walk. I hope they made it ok. We shared a spanakopita by the Old Captains Bar, which wasn’t open yet. Turned out Ronnie shared another one with Mike later on. A spanakopita is a puff pastry pie, with cheese and spinach inside. I then did a little walk on my own, but first took a photo of this lovely painting on the harbour wall, which is new.
The next thing I wanted to do was visit Kamares Oude Vuurtoren. You can see this when your ferry comes in to dock. You can also see a path to it, I just have never got there. You basically start by a little beach where Mike and Ronnie swim in the summer.
Turned out, I wasn’t the only person on the path, a lady was walking her dog Molly. Eventually the path becomes steps and there is a whiff in the air. I have always wondered were the water treatment works were for Kamares and yes they were below me. I do remember years ago, sitting by a harbour in Greece and watching the sea and seeing a very identifiable set of objects spurting out of a pipe straight into the water by our feet. Things have moved on thank goodness!
This is the first tower.
What was odd was this pipe crossing the path in a very awkward way, it clearly came from the treatment works, and at the top of the steps, there was an enclosed header tank thing. This is where the second tower was. The pipe after entering the tank, had another that emerged from the other end of the tank and headed down to the sea. The second tower is in a bit of a state, they should not let anyone near it, the roof has partially collapsed!
I sat on the rocks by the pipe and then I heard this gurgling sound. I then realised that the water that had been treated was being pumped from the station into the sea. The pipe went round the corner so I could not see the colour of the water coming out of it! I dearly hoped a ferry would turn up as I would have got a super shot, never mind.
Tonight we are all going to Cameron, for a meal, tomorrow lunchtime we are off on our ferry, then flying Sunday. It’s been a super trip, made some decisions, all will become clear soon! Thanks to everyone!
