Homeward bound…

So the final post on the March getaway, only posting this as I got three new photos, I just took them then realised what a lovely sequence I had on my hands.

Leaving Sifnos at the end of my Greek getaways is becoming harder to do. This is the third time and trip four is already planned. At least I will have some company, next time I am homeward bound. Even Ronnie seems to have grasped the situation, having said goodbye to Mike’s son two days ago, he having taken the same ferry. After leaving Serifos, we rounded one of that islands tips, to gradually reveal a sinking sun, before it finally dipped below the horizon for last night. 




 At the end of the journey we got the call from the captain to go the the unloading point on the ferry, once I got there I saw a couple with a lovely back Labrador. I was in need of a bit of dog love, so I went over and asked if I could say hello. She was very friendly and periodically took to robustly washing my face, like Luna does. There was a lot of noises and vibrations as we docked, she was very good about those.

I then walked to Faros One, I had a couple of beers sitting outside, chatting to the staff that both Hazel and I know so well. Opposite there is a weird nightclub/bar that Mike mentioned on Facebook. I did not go in! The next morning I had their all in breakfast and in my attempt to better get to know the mainland Greek transport systems, I took the X96 bus to the airport. While waiting for it, I saw two stray dogs expertly crossing the road, the train is quieter today as it’s a Bank holiday. 

After reaching the airport I had my usual ice cream before going through security. It’s nice and sunny now, as it is in the UK. I look forward to my next trip, to Andros, Milos and Serifos.

X nearly marks the spot

I decided on my last long walk to go to Vathy, the place where over two years ago I broke my leg. I reckoned it was about fifteen kilometres, if I walked from Kamares. So I headed out along my usual route to Apollonia. Very often especially on this stretch of road when I see bikes and vehicles I often get a wave or a toot. I saw the guy who has the Indian style tuk tuk, who looks like a captain but he doesn’t have a boat I think. He seems crammed in the cab of the vehicle as he is quite tall. As it was early there were a few clouds kissing the mountains. I went to my favourite pie shop, told the owner where I was going in Greek, also that I was going home Tuesday. I had looked up that tomorrow I was having a day of rest, but the rest word did not work for her, sometimes there are local dialects that stymie google translate! Swimming lesson

  Last night Ronnie was happy to come along and have a meal in the town. It was still hot, we went to a restaurant which is on the second floor of a building overlooking the port and beach. The place was really friendly towards him and gave him his own little water bowl, a silver salver, made out of tin foil. As usual he stole the hearts of many people in the place, a couple that he seemed very keen on, I realised later they had two dogs he wanted to say hello too under their table. Anyway we had a little free starter, with bread and I order the lemon chicken with potatoes. I ordered my beer in Greek, she said it was ok, but the words for “a beer please” would do, instead of my convoluted “can I have a beer please”. The meal  was very good, when the Superjet appeared, Ronnie decided to look through the railing to see if his owners had  appeared on it. Back on Sifnos

I have not posted on this blog even though I have returned to both Sifnos and Serifos after my leg healed. But this time, the two year anniversary had me travel to Sifnos, and although the first two weeks did not go as planned, I think I more than made up for it on the third week. Here is a photo I took while having a coffee in Apollonia with my friends, when I was able to get out and about again. As walking is good for physical and mental health, I often go with my friends to the next town Apollonia and walk back. It’s easier than walking back from than to, as the road slowly goes uphill on the outward leg. But even sixty five year old legs soon get accustomed to the hills over here. The road is not so busy and you see so much more than when you are in a car. Nature is marching on after the heat of summer, and careful eyes can spot  it coming into bloom again.
