A day to remember…
So my last full day on Paros and I took the car out again. This time to a village I had driven past, but needed to explore properly. So I had a wander around the old part of Lefkes, I would have cheerfully bought a coffee or a candle in the church but everything was closed up. I did see an old lady wandering the streets, but no one else really. It’s gone cold again, that strong wind is back. Temperature single digits. I did hear the church bells, that was largely the only sound coming out of the village. Here as elsewhere Montbretia is flowering, I think in the UK June would be when it flowers. I have no idea what the pretty yellow building is or was…
My next village was Marpissa, this was a village of windmills, except only one was intact, the others derelict. Like Lefkes everything was shut up, but I think I did see a couple of people to say hello to. There was an old lady here to, with a stick, and she was was finding every step extremely painful to take. But she got home ok.
I did look at an ancient marble quarry but to be honest it’s very hard to know what you are looking at. It seemed to be a slot on the ground, which was supported on both sides by blocks of stone. Wisely there was fencing around it, but no signs to explain what happened here? There was a guy nearby selling carved marble products and some relic buildings, that looked too new to be ancient!
I then drive the car back to the main town and told them about the tyre. I think they were surprised I changed it. One thing I noticed, was that because of the rough sea and where I parked it, one side was covered in salt crystals! The car looked quite old and unkept, I don’t think they minded much.
I then went into a ferry ticket office because I was concerned about the winds and the ferries. Sure enough, although I had seen a Blue Star ferry today, the ferry to Sifnos, was cancelled yesterday and tomorrow morning is going to be even rougher! So I might be stuck her for a bit. My options are to stay put and wait to see what happens, the next Sifnos boat is Tuesday, or go back to Naxos and then Piraeus for my flight, or go back to, Piraeus, explore Athens, or see if I can get the ferry to Sifnos from there.. it’s a bit of a guessing game. Luckily the guy in the ticket office was very helpful.
So my plan was to wrap up this blog from now on, not write anything else until, I come back in June. The air tickets are already booked and ideas for islands to visit considered but not set in stone! I will let you all know when I start the June Odyssey off ! These posts will start appearing on Facebook when I am back in the UK.
