Tuesday heading home

So it’s time to go home tomorrow, on the ferry, then the plane. They are having a sending off impromptu party at the only cafe open in Kamares before the ferry leaves. A lady who lives near Chrysopigi monastery, is going to be on the ferry with me. I have learnt a lot more about this island and it’s people, a different season where nature is waking up, at home where she is still asleep. I am a bit disappointed but not surprised at my feeble progress on using the Greek language. I think a lot more preconceptions about Greece have been blown away, the public toilets at Apollonia like the ones at Kamares are if nothing better than what we would find in the UK. The wine in its plastic bottles is very good, forgot those retsina memories! Most of all, the people are super friendly and I look forward to coming back, in another season, in what is becoming another life for me.

On the ferry to Piraeus, I sat with the lady from Chrysopigi on the boat and we had a nice chat together, the six hours passed quickly by. A brother of a friend of hers was onboard also, he is Albanian, but works in Greece. We had an interesting three way conversation. As they were both smokers and it was getting cold on deck, he lent me a warm sweater thing. My friend had her lovely dog Cookie with her. The Albanian guy picks grapes and olives and works on the mainland. Hard work. His wages are pretty small. He had a fourteen hour coach journey after leaving the ferry, starting an hour after we docked. The next time I munch an olive or sip a glass of wine, I should think of him. We should all meet someone like him in our lives. He told me to keep the sweater. The kindness of strangers eh?

Finally I must thank everyone on the island who have made me so welcome, especially Hazel and Mike, I hope to see you all soon! Thanks to Paula too! It feels like I have been away for a month, not two weeks!
