Further exploring the Syros countryside

Last night as I was sitting in a nice taverna drinking a beer, having enjoyed a tasty meal, I connected my phone to the free Wi-Fi provided by the Ermoupoli port authority. The Wi-Fi page has all sorts of useful travel information about ferries and cruise liners. A Euro dropped. Of course this is a huge harbour and it looks new. A cruise liner would clearly be able to berth here and all those swanky shops would welcome those tourists.. A similar scheme is being planned for Sifnos. 😞 From my brief stay, you can see the tavernas that I have been going to, are probably in the original part of the port and the swanky new ones, that charge more for a beer and are less authentic are in the newer bit. The one I went to last night was a family run one, they gave me a dessert sampler after the main meal with a liquor called Mastiha. It was very nice. Their business card has a photo of the great grandmother of the waitress who served me.

On the way to last nights meal, I met one of my fellow apartment block inhabitants. Before I saw her, I met one of her dogs, then the other three and herself appeared on the stairs. That explains the dog barking. To her credit, I have only heard one dog barking at one time, they were all barking in the stairwell.

So today I set off in the car, first heading West to visit a couple of places I had not got to yesterday. The roads became very narrow, but were paved, so the only risk, was meeting another vehicle. At the first resort, it was deserted except for people sprucing up their tavernas for the upcoming season. I think the first resort was the nicest. This was Kinio.

I then had to go back to Ermoupoli to then head up North, the paved roads are not very extensive in the upper segment of the island and don’t reach to the coast. But not far from the old town was this old windmill you can stay in!

Then I started going up North on these narrow roads. Place names were a bit hard to come by, I saw terracing and a guy rotavating  his ground. There did not seen many animals about, a few hens and dogs barking at seeing me and the car. I did see a few modern windmills, on top of a mountain. The coast could be seen in the distance.

It was interesting to drive about, there were few houses, signs of civilisation which was nice and surprisingly the roads were as good as they were! Here was a church, there are not as many as there are on Sifnos, but there seems to be loads of petrol stations, I don’t know why.

Lastly another photo of the beautiful countryside, sadly I have not seen evidence of hiking paths, that you get on Sifnos. Off to Tinos tomorrow lunchtime, I saw that island in the distance several times on my travels today. The car has been returned, undamaged thankfully! My washing has been hung out today and is now dry!
